Scott Pilgrim vs the World. Retro Review 10th Anniversary

Scott Pilgrim vs the World on August 13, 2020 has been a decade since the film adaptation of Brian Lee O'Malley's comic book was released. In the span of 10 years, this film directed by Edgar Wright has become a cult classic for film lovers.

This is because this film is full of absurd and 'magical' things that would be difficult to understand from anyone's normal perspective. This film is also due to its relatively high loyalty to the source of its adaptation, making it the packaging of a unique film which, due to its very thick characteristics, is difficult to find a match for, even now.

As with teen flicks in general, Scott Pilgrim vs the World highlights the dynamics of teenage life, which are often colored by love problems. Where, falling in love, heartbreak, breakup, competition to get the idol of the heart, unrequited love, and rejection of love are aspects that can be developed into the foundation of an interesting story from the initial process of the approach to the ups and downs that follow. experienced by the perpetrators and also the impact on the environment and those closest to them.

Through this story we will be introduced to a young character named Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera). For a young man his age, Scott's life was amazing. The reason is that this young Toronto city man has never had a problem attracting the opposite sex even though he doesn't have a steady income, has an average face, and lives in his best friend's flat every day; Wallace Wells (Kieran Culkin).

Until one day, the life of the young bass picker from the band Sex-Bob-Omp changed drastically when he became interested in Ramona Flowers (Elizabeth Winstead); a beautiful girl with a unique appearance who often appears in his dreams. Fortunately, Scott's love was not one-sided because Ramona gave a positive response. However, this is where the problem begins, because in order to become Ramona's partner, Scott must first defeat the girl's seven former lovers. Not to mention that Scott himself has actually been in a relationship with his fanatical fan, a young girl named Knives Chau (Ellen Wong) who adores him very much.

Scott Pilgrim vs the World is essentially a teen romance drama. The difference is, in line with what is stated in the story of the book, the characters in it contain individuals who have special powers that can usually be found in superhero characters.

Not only that, due to O'Malley's wild imagination, making this film a very rich story telling – with elements of videogames, anime, rom-coms, rock musicals, sitcoms, kung-fu movies, Bollywood, where the main character grows more and more. stronger with the experience and rewards it receives. With a unique formula that has never been used before, the material for this film makes it even more special compared to other teen drama films available, although automatically the presentation of this magical film is not easily accepted by audiences of all groups.

Although later from a commercial point of view, it was proven not to have achieved encouraging results, through Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Edgar Wright had an amazing achievement. From the insanely crazy visuals, the dialogues that have become popular among young Americans, the Sex-Bob-ombs songs written by Beck to the slick performances of the ideal cast, besides the two main stars, Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, start from Chris Evans (already Johnny “Human Torch” Storm but before playing Captain America), Brie Larson before becoming an Oscar and Captain Marvel caliber actress, Brandon Routh after becoming Superman, Anna Kendrick, Jason Schwartzman, Aubrey Plaza, Kieran Culkin, Mae Whitman and actor comedian Bill Hader as the narrator.

Not only that, Scott Pilgrim vs the World until now is recognized as one of the best comic adaptation films ever made. Side by side with other popular titles, such as Watchmen, Snowpiercer, and Marvel and DC superhero films.

Scott Pilgrim vs the World can be streamed on Netflix
