Cruella Movie: Synopsis and Review
Cruella Movie: Synopsis and Review
Since Cinderella in 2015, Disney has continued to adapt live action from their catalog of successful animated classics. They also don't stop modifying the standard, even though it makes most of the results of this live action adaptation reap mixed results. And that's what is so obvious in this latest release, Cruella. Just like they did with Maleficent, this latest live-action installment tells the origin story of one of their most iconic antagonists, Cruella De Vil from 101 Dalmatians.
Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film Cruella tells the story of a creative young girl named Estella (Emma Stone) who then falls into a life of crime in the city of London due to her childhood tragedy. Determined to build his own reputation, he began working at the leading fashion boutique, Liberty, where the fruit of his creativity caught the attention of legendary fashion men. Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson), and becomes his protégé. However, Estella later learns of the mentor's connection with the tragedy of her past. As a result, everything changes, Estella begins to carry out acts of heist, sabotage, and plots of chaos, to achieve her goal of revenge which in the process triggers her dark side.
The film Cruella explores the story of rebellion and the beginning of the career of this iconic fashion actor, in a composition that resembles a blend of Devil Wears Prada, Hustle, and Joker. This foundation is no doubt like a sign of separation from the formulaic tendencies of Disney films, with a firm statement from the filmmaker.
The reason is, the tone of Cruella's film is darker than usual, and somewhat surprisingly its presentation is more targeted at adult audiences than children, while proving that Cruella visually is the most different and deviant from usual. The inspiration for the 70s punk style was full of rebellion, as was the intensity of the increasingly heated fashion war between Baroness and Cruella. However, visually and in detail Gillespie is very charming. Almost all the elements in this film, both scenes, soundtracks, hairstyles, even the wardrobe worn have their own role in this film, both in terms of calculations and symbols.
With this emphasis, the scenario created by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara has proven to be a fun dish, full of action scenes and the soul of a heist film, as well as some unexpected humor. The minus is the fairly long duration, which makes the pace of the story a little problematic, especially in the second half.
The charming performances of the Emma duo who are the two key players make the film as a whole very entertaining. Guaranteed the audience will really enjoy the feud between the two.
Cruella's biggest problem is that what's presented here isn't really as committed as audiences expect. As a film that is intended as the origin story of the iconic antagonist, there is no moment that really shows the beginning of this character as Cruella which has been imprinted in the minds of many people. Cruella's character here, although there are some hint scenes here and there, is more likely to be presented in the boundary between the antagonist and the antihero.
Indeed, Gillespie presents the conclusion of the story that will be understood by die-hard fans or those who understand the source of the classic story. However, it is presented in the symbolism and spirit of today's Hollywood trends. The reason is, in an effort to be able to produce an origin story whose ending was told 25 years earlier, the filmmaker made several free modifications, including building a world relationship of the characters that was too close to the limit by accident or a bit forced.
Overall, Cruella's film, I must admit, doesn't really reinforce the mythology of the classic story that started with this novel by Dodie Smith , but for a classy entertainment offering, this 134 minute film, according to the author personally, is very entertaining and is one of the best this year in Indonesia. fantasy fairy tale line.
