Dark Phoenix Movie Synopsis
In 1975, eight year old Jean Gray. Inadvertently uses his telekinesis to cause a car accident that kills his parents. Shortly thereafter, Professor Charles Xavier took him to the Xavier School for Gifted Children. He mentally blocked the accident from his memory and helped him hone his psychic abilities.
In 1992, the X-Men responded to a distress signal from the space shuttle Endeavor, which was badly damaged by a solar flare-like energy. When the X-Men save all the astronauts, Jean is stranded and exposed to energy. But he absorbed everything into his body to save the X-Men plane from being destroyed. Jean survives the event, and her psychic powers become stronger as a result. At the same time, the mental block placed by Xavier was shattered. And he accidentally attacks school mutant Xavier after a mental breakdown, and faints afterward. Then travels to his childhood hometown, Red Hook, New York, after discovering that his father is still alive. The X-Men try to bring Jean home.
Jean travels to the mutant refugee island of Genosha to seek help from Erik Lehnsherr in controlling his powers. But Erik refuses after he gets involved in a battle with the US military forces tasked with capturing him. Jean meets Vuk, the leader of a race of shape-shifting aliens known as D'Bari. Which explains to him that a cosmic force had possessed him and annihilated D'Bars' home planet many years ago. Strength had consumed all there was, until it met with Jean. Meanwhile, Hank McCoy, who feels cheated by Xavier's manipulation of Jean's memory, ally with Erik. Also with the mutant refugees in an attempt to bring down Jean.
Jean's True Strength
After learning of Erik's plan to kill Jean, the X-Men confront him. As they battle, Erik manages to infiltrate the building and confront Jean but is defeated by his newfound ability. Xavier then entered the building with Scott Summers. Jean attacks them until Xavier convinces him to read his memories. Letting his personality resurface. Feeling sorry, Jean asks Vuk to take power from him. However, it quickly turned out that it would kill him. Xavier and Scott are able to prevent Vuk from fully absorbing Jean's powers, before the mutants, including Jean, are captured by troops from the US government and placed on a train to the mutant detention facility.
A regretful Xavier admitted to a very upset Hank. That the latter was right in his earlier accusation of breaking Jean's mind and lying to her. Vuk then attacked the train with his D'Bari troops. When the army is defeated by the shapeshifters, the mutants are free from their restraints to combat the threat. After the mutants defeat most of D'Bari's attackers, Vuk arrives and heads towards Jean. Defeat every mutant that tries to stop him. Meanwhile, Xavier conferred with Jean in his mind. Let Jean's personality take over its power.
Jean saves the mutants from Vuk's attack and the ensuing train crash. Before proceeding to easily vaporize D'Bari's remaining aliens when they attacked him. Vuk once again tries to drain Jean's power, but Jean takes Vuk into space. Reclaims the power that D'Bari had stolen before, before releasing his power and killing Vuk. Jean then disappears as her full potential emerges, releasing a burst of energy in the form of a phoenix.
After the incident, the school changed its name to the Jean Gray School for Gifted Children. And Hank became their new dean. With Xavier retiring after decades of fighting for the rights of mutants. While settling in Paris, Xavier reunites with Erik and reluctantly agrees to play chess with him. As they started playing, a flaming phoenix appeared from the sky.
Dark Phoenix Movie Review
Currently, Dark Phoenix held a very low rating for Rotten Tomatoes. Even on Imdb, many of the negative reviews are disparaging. Which doesn't even mention specifically what they didn't like about the film. Frankly, this review also does not intend to cover up reviews to compensate for the existing low scores of these reviews. Instead, hope to give this Dark Phoenix a fair chance and undermine hatred. The undeserved one from so many outlets that interested potential viewers don't unfairly miss out on a slick film.
Now, if we only focus on the X-Men movies and not Wolverine/Deadpool, we'd say X2 is still the best of them all. With Future Past and First Class as the closest competitors. However, it can be seen that Apocalypse is an absolute boredom if not an abomination like X3. However, if Apocalypse could get a higher Rotten Tomatoes score, we would fail to see what turns Dark Phoenix into such a pathetic rating. One of the main gripes with Apocalypse is how uninspired and boring the action sequences are. Even the main villain of Apocalyspe has the motivation to want to 'destroy the world' so common. At the very least, Dark Phoenix gave the villains a purpose although it could have been better.
They also tried to give Charles Xavier a bit more character confusion than to present him as an evergreen moralist. Also think if James McAvoy gave his best performance as Professor X. However, Fasbender's portrayal of Magneto still feels mediocre. He is still the same character from the previous film without much development. They could definitely introduce some interesting character evolutions. The rest of the X-Men cast is the same as in the previous films, though Storm is definitely more perfect than Apocalypse.
Characters Who Really Act As A Team
Now how does the story compare to X3 which is also based on the Dark Phoenix saga in the comics. Well, even though the conversation and directing are poor, it tells a better story than the old film. However, what is most interesting in the 2019 version is the action sequences. We will feel the X-Men really act as a team. With all the mutants praising each other's superpowers to fight a common enemy. They don't keep using the same settings excessively every time a fight scene occurs.
