Fear Street Part Three: 1666 – Synopsis and Review
With the release of Fear Street Part Three: 1666, Netflix's journey of three straight weeks of horror events has come to an end this July. Still directed by Leigh Janiak , this third installment of the Fear Street trilogy depicts the origins of the curse problem experienced by the city of Shadyshide that has gripped the city for 300 years, with Sarah Fier's point of view as the person who is blamed for the bloody curse.
Fear Street Part Three: 1666 directly continues the events that have been told in the previous film, with Deena (Kiana Madeira) successfully joining Sarah Fier's hands with her body. It was at that moment, Deena began to know what really happened to Sarah Fier.
Through Fier's point of view (also played by Madeira), the audience is transported to the year 1666. In this flashback story, it is revealed how chronologically Fier's 'transformation' as a magician cursed the city of Shadyside.
Deena learns about how the Union's original settlement was ravaged by a blight, and the townspeople become the focus of blaming Sarah, accusing her of making a deal with the devil. However, the truth is far from the stories Deena heard growing up and she learns the true source of the evil plaguing Shadyside. Armed with her newfound knowledge, Deena sets out to save her lover, Sam (Olivia Scott Welch) with the help of her brothers Josh (Benjamin Flores Jr.) and Christine Berman (Gillian Jacobs).
If the first film, 1994 is like a tribute to the slasher films of the 1990s and second, 1978 is a tribute to the slasher of the early 1970s-1980s, then for this third film, there is a thick feel that feels like slick horror films and series released in the last decade. The VVitch, the It dwilogy remake , and the Stranger Things series, are titles that feel this time to have a big impact on the current presentation.
Janiak's choice to make the players of the previous two films play other characters in the 1666 setting adds to its own excitement. This strategy makes the historical aspect of repeating or the presentation of the causal theme that emerges from this saga even stronger. Also in a solid red line with the previous two films.
Of course, as a trilogy ending, Fear Street Part Three: 1666 is not entirely focused on the timeline, where the third half of the timeline moves to its early days. Uniquely, this transfer had presented one of the funniest moments in this trilogy, in the form of a glimpse of the title of the film that seemed to validate what the original title of this film was.
There's actually nothing out of the ordinary here. However, Janiak managed to direct it into a satisfying conclusion round. Every question that covers the veil of mystery in the previous two films is answered neatly (although it turns out that some killer figures are not explained about their origins other than only as tools-ed). The climax scene is also well-arranged and interesting for the modern horror spectacle category.
Indeed, Fear Street Part Three: 1666, as with the previous two films, is not a large-scale blockbuster level film. However, this film manages to maintain the consistency of sensation and fun elements that have been initiated since the beginning.
Fear Street Part Three: 1666 brings it all together in a darker, quieter tone with some truly gruesome scenes on display here. It takes a sharp, and slightly surprising twist to the story to end, but how it justifies itself in that twist is a satisfying way to end this trilogy, with a very effective ending.
To conclude the whole trilogy itself, the author feels that Fear Street is not really the best and brightest visionary exhibition in the history of horror. However, it is very successful in presenting a unique and fun way to explain horror stories.
The author personally rates the Fear Street trilogy as a very rewarding experience. Praise is due to Netflix for daring to experiment with this trilogy and to Janiak who looks like he will be one of the interesting filmmakers to look forward to in the future.
Fear Street Part Three: 1666 can be streamed on Netflix
