How I Became a Superhero: Synopsis and Review

How I Became a Superhero: Synopsis and Review

The film How I Became a Superhero is a French superhero thriller film that is starting this July coming to the Netflix channel. With a duration of around one hour 41 minutes, this film directed by Douglas Attal is adapted from the novel of the same name by Gérald Bronner, with a cast of Pio Marmaï, Leïla Bekhti, Vimala Pons, and Swann Arlaud.

This film offers the premise that ordinary humans and superhuman powers coexist, causing the police to be preoccupied not only with ordinary criminal matters but also crimes related to the abuse of superpowers. The premise might be reminiscent of one of the action movies on Netflix starring Jamie Foxx, Project Power.

In Paris, a new community of superheroes began to grow. Everyone watches their actions on television and wants to be like them. This causes a genius named Naja (Swann Arlaud) to concoct new psychotropic drugs that can make them have super powers. Now everyone can become the special human they want to be.

As a result, the death toll and the damage caused to the city are also increasing, which makes it even more difficult for the Paris police to deal with it. To reduce that number, a police officer named Gary Moreau (Marmaï) and Lieutenant Cécile Schaltzmann (Pons) are sent to solve the case, which in the process they come face to face with unexpected discoveries, especially secrets relating to Gary's own past.

Before How I Became a Superhero, many superhero-themed films were released earlier, which raises the question of what can be offered from this film. In addition to Project Power, the presentation of How I Became a Superhero can also be said to be a blend of The Boys series and Jupiter's Legacy.

In The Boys, it is clearly explained the negative side of the superheroes who are actually saviors and also about scientists who inject a special serum to give ordinary humans super powers. In this film, two similar things can be found, with the presence of Naja and his troops who are the culprits in turning young people into superhumans with no goal of saving the world.

Meanwhile, an element previously found in Jupiter's Legacy is when the old superheroes want their young superpowers to be more responsible in using their new special abilities. Which is also one of the interesting conflicts raised in this film.

The performances of the two key players who became the main characters of this film, Pio Marmaï and Vimala Pons were able to appear beautifully to bring the characters they played. Meanwhile, the ranks of other supporting players are also quite able to compensate for their appearance. The performance of the players is what incidentally is the key factor in presenting the story of this film to be very alive.

Of course, when compared to similar genre films, especially Hollywood productions, this film is a little out of class. However, still, for those who like films with superior content (such as personal writers-ed), this action thriller drama film by Douglas Attal is a pity to miss.

Although it's a little reminiscent of The Boys, in terms of content, the content can be said to be different in contrast. Here, there are no nudity scenes, scenes of excessive violence, or harsh swearing. Overall, How I Became a Superhero is not a perfect film. However, even so, this film is still a film that manages to offer solid entertainment.

How I Became a Superhero can be streamed on Netflix
