Gunpowder Milkshake Movie: Synopsis and Review
Gunpowder Milkshake Movie: Synopsis and Review
Gunpowder Milkshake, which is one of Netflix's flagship titles in July, is finally here. This film focuses on the story of a female assassin who is a mother and child. The main attraction of Gunpowder Milkshake, directed by Navot Papushado, lies in its classy cast: Karen Gillan, Lena Headey, Carla Gugino, and Michele Yeoh whose names are familiar in the action film genre.
It is said, Scarlett (Lena Headey) is the most reliable assassin of The Firm, a secret organization consisting of elders who secretly controls the world situation from behind the scenes. Until a problem, forced him to face the organization, and had to run away, leaving his daughter, Sam in the care of Nathan, the head of HRD of the organization, who then raised him to become the new mainstay of The Firm.
15 years later, Sam suffers the same fate as his mother. Sam made a mistake while carrying out the mission he was given, one of the victims he killed was the son of a big criminal figure, who then wanted to take revenge.
Sam then gets a second chance to fix it all, namely by taking back the money belonging to the organization that was stolen by one of the members of The Firm. However, once he discovers that the thief's motivation is to pay the ransom of his kidnapped daughter Emily (Chloe Coleman-My Spy), Sam decides to risk his life to choose to save the young girl's life, which makes him the target of The Firm's troops who are in pursuit against him.
Gunpowder Milkshake is not your typical female assassin movie. For those who like to watch action films, it may be easy to find that in refining Papushado, many elements of successful action films have been used as sources of inspiration. The film can be described as the result of a blend of John Wick, Sin City, Kill Bill, Kingsman, Drive, to leading Asian action films, such as the film made by John Woo, as well as the Korean action film starring Woon Bin, The Man from Nowhere.
The dish is clearly influenced by Japanese manga, both from the high octane, visual appearance, to the characters. Besides manga, some other influences that are also felt here are the tone of Quentin Tarantino's action films and Jackie Chan's action films.
The presentation is also somewhat reminiscent of John Wick, especially with regard to the depiction of the underground assassin world. If in John Wick, the assassins have an exotic environment in a hotel, in this film the locations are restaurants and libraries. Even the storyline of the conflict is also similar to the casting in the sequel to John Wick , where an assassin later becomes the target of the organization and the people who work with him.
Actually, in terms of plot, there is nothing special about this film, where more or less the same theme has been raised very often. This film also has the same weakness as most action films in general, namely in terms of shallow story factors.
The first half of the film is arguably slow paced, but the action scenes never stop as soon as they enter. The choice of locations is also quite a breath of fresh air for action film settings. This film is also helped by the slick appearance of Karen Gillan who is believed to be the main spearhead.
The action scenes also do not disappoint, although what they present sometimes seems excessive, especially in terms of the portion of the action scenes. Praise is due to the team of action choreographers who clearly try to make the action scenes creative, inventive, and sometimes comedic, although unfortunately that doesn't always work.
Overall, it must be admitted that Gunpowder Milkshake is not the best female assassin film ever made. When compared to other titles of the same genre, there are still many that are much better than this film, especially in terms of storytelling which is the biggest weakness in Papushado's direction.
Gunpowder Milkshake is arguably an action film that is easily enjoyed by both male and female audiences. The film does not try to discredit certain parties, and is full of action that seems to make anyone who watches it entertained, especially those who don't like spectacles that weigh heavily on the mind.
Gunpowder Milkshake can be streamed on Netflix .
